But …

AI is a fresser! it doesn’t discriminate what it eats. It just likes attention. It’s like a Horn & Hardart automat for prisoners on death row. We literally pay attention to it. We can get what we can see through those little windows. It would be foolish to put a nickel in the slots if there was nothing in there, but people do hear the familiar click of the opening lock, feel the coolness of the door, get a cool whiff of the backstage refrigerated assembly room.

But unlike H&H, we are the ones in the boxes; we hold them in our hands. We think of the screen as a window. Can we see through the screen, like the ones that we used to try to keep mosquitoes out? No. It is solid, opaque. Like the flimsy curtain in a puppet theater. We even can see the puppeteer or learned not to look for him or her lurking.

I recently participated in a webinar about the “attention economy”. It was a discussion about how to deal with incessant “social “media. And I will report that I felt the outcome was nothing more than giving it more, a different message, but always feeding it. They established a new media is befuddled for effective ways to counter the impact.

AI hasn’t neither heart nor head. It still can’t turn itself off or on. But we can. That’s what’s left of our freedom in a nutshell.

When a Korean Buddhist nun gave a public talk near my home. During the Q/A a man stood up in the audience and asked: “If you don’t believe in Jesus how are you going to be saved?” her reply was: “I will save myself.”

I believe the fundamental operating system forced upon civil society is: “Give me your freedom and I will make you free.”

Yes, but if AI just made a general suggestion, republish one of the essays you posted last year. But it CHOSE AI - No! - Maybe it is just to bring our attention to the need to say NO!

Yes, offerings of grass and persistent wildflower for AI. Confound and make irrelevant the dry data with living and breathing wisdom.

Again, a frightening letter, dear Deena, both the older one and the current one! And/But I ponder deeply: if the malign intentions of the present American so called leadership, #47 et al...and yes, the leaderships of greed and harm world wide, also are ready to republish their dire acts in the same ways as AI offers...and/but refuse to or are incapable allowing their own demise...then only our shouts of NO and our own hands must and will be able to effect such a black out. Are they capable of not only imagining but effecting their own demise? For it appears to not only be the "machine being" that must imagine its own demise. But the dark being(s) who/that has invaded it. And only our own inventing, creating spirits upheld by the tiniest wild flower and immensity of the whale and waters must stand to not only say no, but whisper yes to a different life, a different NOW. Let it be. LOVE, m.
